To allow the ‘Master’ to drink rum, or lemonade in the shade, the education of the slaves had to be increased… with education, and an ever constant burning will to be free, the slaves burnt the fields… and many were killed… but the die was cast… and slavery was therefore on its last leg… whereupon, emancipation was grudgingly doled out, and the ambiguous word ‘freedom’, was given to the slaves as a feel good mantra (but not as an ideal)… thus entered on the stage of their existence… its cousin…

When the principles of this unholy child… colonization… also went out of fashion, (but not out of mind), and the equally diabolical offshoot, imperialism took on a negative persona, but not a lack of intent, the still ever increasing hunger for raw materials and cheap labour necessitated the need for another engine… thus ‘globalization’ came into being… and was staunchly championed by the West… so once again, all was well on the Western Front… just as long as it was… a one-way street…

But over time it became a two-lane… then a highway… now there is an acute fear in the hallowed halls of power and industry that it is fast becoming a superhighway… so out from under the rocks, and sallying forth like avengers of old, have come those who forever wish to check the ‘others’ progress… stunt their growth… and keep such ‘upstart’ nations perpetually in ‘their’ place…

But putting off the inevitable only means the inevitable will take longer to be manifested… and this, although undesirable, (in the long run), is nonetheless considered well, and good, in the eyes of the devious, who administer this… medicine… but… as a potent side effect. It will also give the downtrodden time to grow, and time to learn.

One could have drowned in the accumulated drool that dripped profusely from the lips of the Western markets when China, with a populous bursting at the seams, was lustfully admitted into the fold…

To a butcher, such a contrived happenstance could, with relish, be looked upon as a further proof of manifest destiny… and the gleeful furtherance of more lambs to the slaughter…

Thus, if China had not become what it has become… and India was not showing signs that it has visions of entering that holy stratosphere… not to mention the nations of Africa slowly bringing up the rear… and the forgotten, maligned places here, and there, beginning to take on an unmistakable lustre, things would have gone into reverse… and the past could well be the present for maybe a few more umpteen centuries to come…

But this was not to be… because thankfully, it is not man, at the controls…

No wonder the giant is beginning to feel like a dwarf… and its magic elixir, globalization, like a millstone around the neck…

Hmmm… What’s the next engine… I wonder…?

Who was it again that said… history teaches us, that man learns nothing from history…?
