The world feels as if it is spinning out of control with no common goals or perspectives. When governments at both local and national levels cannot find a way forward the result is erratic behavior that keeps everyone on edge. A lack of united leadership is very dangerous. A breakdown in communications, the huge impact of global warming and the constant reverberations of disputes leading to war, threaten the existence of humanity. It is time to take a serious examination of where we are going and what needs to be changed in order to promote survival.

A document titled, A Common Endeavor: Realizing the Promise of America was written and is being disseminated by The National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’is of the United States in order to cause reflection, action and study for futuristic solutions as the country has celebrated and then moves past its 250 anniversary. (April 2026)

“This message from the Bahá’ís of the United States is an invitation to thoughtful

conversation. In this time of challenge, we need spaces where we can pause, reflect,

and listen to others with openness and goodwill. We hope this message can inspire

such conversations—in homes and neighborhoods, in faith communities and civic

settings—so that we can move forward together.” A Common Endeavor. April 2026

The essence of this document is that humanity’s efforts to build a perfect union have been marked by both setbacks and crises, as well as remarkable progress and achievement. It is not a sign of failure of the past, but rather reaching a critical juncture requiring us to revise our strategies. As existing systems increasingly reveal their inability to meet the challenges before them, we are invited to adopt approaches capable of transcending division and fostering a more unified and resilient society.

When the document was presented to members of Congress it’s impact was immediately expressed. At a recent press conference on Capitol Hill, Member of Congress Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania reflected on the need to adopt a sense of shared purpose in a divided time. “…all people are as ‘the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch’…No matter our political party, our ethnicity, our background, our faith,” he continued, “we are brought together, bound together by our shared humanity and our shared purpose as Americans.”  BWNS June 2026

Senators and Congressmen alike responded with comments that reflected on the purpose of America, the American story, the importance of continuing a history of uniting people for the common good. Senator Wyden of Oregon said, (it) was “so essential”. We are “at a moment when so much in public life pulls people apart.” Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut remarked that the government has too often overlooked the conditions in which people find meaning and connection. He said, that Americans are “doing our best work when we’re actually thinking about the policies we make and whether they’re actually making people feel spiritually fulfilled.” BWNS June 2026.

Everyone agreed that it was not a matter of trying to create uniformity, but rather of learning to exist with our differences. The document states that, “we need conversations at all levels of society, from the neighborhood to the halls of government, about the shared values that strengthen America’s social fabric… Some efforts seek(ing) to build upon accomplishments that are worthy of preservation, while others focus(ing) on new ways of doing things. The complex endeavor of social evolution requires a range of approaches.”  BWNS 2026

Changes based on moral and spiritual foundations of the collective well-being lead to actions the engender friendships and common remedies. If we like each other, we are more likely to find those solutions that will embrace a common good. It’s time to place spiritual love for each other at the center of purpose and action. The principle of the oneness of humanity is essential. We are, after all, part of a shared existence where we depend on each other for survival.

Let us not falter now. This trying time can be an inflection point when we see constructive efforts begin to intensify. Let us redeem the incalculable price that generations have paid by pressing forward toward true prosperity for all. With God’s help, let us arise in service and even sacrifice when called. Let us see through our differences and recognize the sincere, fair-minded souls all around us who long to contribute. Let us join in common endeavor. Let us draw on the power of love, of justice, of creativity and enterprise. Together, let us bring about the spiritual renewal that will lead us to the realization of our highest aspirations.” THE BAHÁ’ÍS OF THE UNITED STATES
